Centreville Mayan Youth Dance Program

Centreville Immigration Forum is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity, an innovative partnership with the International Mayan League, an indigenous organization, and Grupo Sotz’il, a world renowned Maya Kaqchikel contemporary dance company.  This innovative project, Restoring Our Ancestral Knowledge, will take place September 5-10, 2017.

It concludes with a public performance on Sunday, September 10 at the Centreville Fire Department 17 (5856 Old Centreville Road) at 5:00 PM.

The program includes a week of workshops with Mayan youth in our community, and will bring neighbors together to celebrate their historic traditions.   Please join us in standing with indigenous families and children during these times, and let them know that they are not alone!

Through our partnerships the Mayan League has succeeded in raising 70% of the total amount needed! The League is working hard to raise the final $9000 needed for the tour and presentations., and donations are welcome.  Send checks to CIF designated for “Mayan program” at Box 81, Centreville VA  20122, or bring cash donations by the Center, 5944 Centreville Crest La., Centreville VA  20121.

Help us to create this unique and vibrant space rooted in indigenous culture, history, dance, and music from Central America! Be a part of changing the narrative for so many youth in our community.  Plan to join us on Sunday, Sept 10, to celebrate the diversity and resilience of our youth!

The presentation of Grupo Sotz’il’s Uk’u’x Ulew / Heart of Earth is made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Partial support for the workshops was provided by the Sacred Fire Foundation.
